May 24, 2020 - To Johnson City, Tennessee

I was heading down to Johnson City, Tennessee to visit my Mom and Sister.

As you can see, weather was not the best the first half of the trip but certainly doable.

Passing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Looking down at Kentmorr Airpark, an airport community.  I have heard only one resident still flies and the runway is in poor shape though.

Nearby is the Kentmorr Marina, a short walk from the grass strip.

Passing by Tilghman Island and Bromo's cottage.

Passing by Solomons Island and the Patuxent Naval Air Station, barely visible in the gloom.

Passing by St. Mary's Airport.  The taxiway is still under reconstruction.

Looking southeast down the Rappahannock River as it heads out to the bay.

Looking up the Rappahannock River.  I flew it back in January.

The sea of trees north of Richmond.

Intersecting the James River west of Richmond.  Looking east.

Looking west.  I decided to follow the James River for awhile.

I've never flown the James before.

Not much out here west of Richmond.

I figure this is either a new runway/airport being constructed.  Or an old one being deconstructed.  I think the latter.

I left the river and continued west southwest.  The weather actually deteriorated and I was starting to wonder.

But then suddenly I was out with blue sky poking through the clouds.

Flying over a logged out area.

Over the Roanoke River east of, you guessed it, Roanoke.

The river meanders west northwest towards the mountains.

The Roanoke River enters the Appalachians.

There is Roanoke in the distance.

Talk about privacy!

Must be a family affair.

The sun came out and painted the mountains bright green.

Not sure what this is?  An Appalachian Machu Picchu?

A sea of green.

Civilization on an Appalachian plateau.

I was traveling down the spine of the mountains.

Greener than Ireland!

Approaching the New River.

Weather cells off to the west.  I could see them on my ADS-B In fed iPad.

Flying parallel to the New River for awhile.

Don't want to fly through that!

Big horse farm.

South Holston Lake.

I don't think I've ever seen so many boats on South Holston as I saw today.

Turning base for landing on runway four at Johnson City Airport.  The runway is hard to see in this picture.

Safe on deck at Johnson City Airport with plane securely tied down and covered.
